2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: To replace the engine front cover, one is required to first gather the required tools: another tool in the list is front and rear cover alignment tool (J41476). Start by taking off the generator, the Power Steering Pump, coolant pump manifold, the crankshaft balancer, and using the bolt to move the belt tensioner, which prevents the front cover bolt from fitting. Next, remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts and the front cover bolts (501). Take out the front cover (502) and gasket (503), and discard the old one. In necessary, remove the oil seal (140) and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor bolt (705) with the sensor (703) and the o-ring seal (704). Clean and inspect the engine front cover, and make sure that all gasket surfaces do not contain oil or foreign matter. Put on a bead, 5 mm (0.20 inch) long, of sealant gm p/n 12378577 or 12346141 (Canadian P/N 89022195) or equivalent, 20 mm (0.80 inch) long, od at oil pan to engine block junction. Install the new front cover gasket (503) and cover (502) and tighten its bolts (502) and its oil pan-to-front cover bolts until it is moderately tight, avoid overtightening. Use the j41476 to throw the front cover to the position correctly so that the crankshaft front oil seal (140) is centered. Press or crankseal front cover onto extensions. After replacing the j41476, replace a new crankshaft front oil seal (140), then the coolant pump manifold. Check the cmp sensor o-ring seal (704) for damage; if not broken, lubricate with clean engine oil and attach it to the cmp sensor (703) using the bolt (705) with a torque of 12 nm (106 inch lbs). Last, reposition the belt tensioner, install the bolt, tightening it at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.), and replace the Power Steering Pump and generator.
