2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: A mechanic must disconnect the negative Battery Cable and drain cooling system fluid prior to engine front cover replacement. First remove the drive belt tensioner following the coolant recovery reservoir drainage of engine oil and cooling system fluid. Moving on to the replacement, first exhaust the Oil Pan, crankshaft balancer, and Power Steering Pump with its accompanying lines before readjusting the Power Steering Pump. Removal of the engine front cover process begins with disconnecting the thermostat bypass pipe and radiator outlet hose from the engine front cover and the Water Pump. Disassemble the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wiring harness bracket bolt and its bracket before removing the three engine front cover bolts and the entire unit with its gasket. Prior to installation check the engine front cover and if replacing the components you must remove the drive belt shield bolt and shield as well as the Water Pump and the 24x ckp sensor. During installation place the 24x ckp sensor back into position if it was removed while also installing the Water Pump. Reinstall the drive belt shield after removal while using a bolt to tighten it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Install the engine front cover to its gasket after applying gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent sealant to each side. Use bolts 1, 2, and 3 to secure the engine front cover by fastening the small bolts to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs. Then torque the large bolts 2, 3 to 55 Nm (41 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the ckp sensor wiring harness bracket alongside its bolt by applying torque to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). Begin radiator outlet hose attachment then secure the thermostat bypass pipe before adding Power Steering Pump and lines and finally installing crankshaft balancer and drive belt tensioner and Oil Pan. The procedure requires installation of the Coolant Reservoir followed by new engine oil and coolant addition with negative cable reconnection and ckp system learning sequence completion.
