2006 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2006 Chevrolet SSR?
A: Check the brake fluid level of your brake master cylinder reservoir before starting to change the rear brake pads. The brake fluid level requires extraction by a brake fluid extractor when it is above the midpoint between safety levels but no extraction is needed when the level matches the midpoint. Lift the vehicle then take out the tire and wheel assembly. The installation of a large c-clamp over the top of the brake caliper against the outboard pad allows the piston compression needed to slide the caliper off the rotor by tightening the clamp until it pushes pistons into the caliper and then removing the clamp. Start by loosening and rotating the brake caliper downward before removing both rear brake pads and retaining clips from the mounting bracket and brake caliper retaining clip. Use denatured alcohol to clean the brake caliper mounting bracket followed by filtered and non-lubricated air to dry it. During Brake Pad installation never use old retaining clips; install new clips instead. Begin by installing new Brake Pad retaining clips onto the brake caliper mounting bracket followed by the brake pads making sure the retaining clip for the brake pads sits correctly in the brake caliper. Affix the brake caliper's retaining clip followed by rotating the rear brake caliper upward until it reaches its desired position then tighten the upper brake caliper mounting bolt to 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). After complete installation of tire and wheel assemble, you should lower the vehicle before checking the brake master cylinder reservoir to confirm it needs refilling. Press the Brake Pedal gradually and with force to position the pads correctly before performing a process to break in the new pads.
