  A: Begin front cover replacement by taking off the Water Pump and cmp sensor and crankshaft balancer followed by Oil Pan-to-front cover screws and front cover fasteners. Start by removing both the front cover together with the gasket then extract the crankshaft oil seal and throw away the old gasket. Installation requires the replacement of the crankshaft oil seal along with the front cover gasket and prohibits the use of any sealant on the gasket surface unless directed. Apply a 0.2-inch (5 mm) length of gm p/n 12378190 sealant material (or equivalent product) which measures 0.8 inches (20 mm) in length on the Oil Pan to engine block interface. Place a new front cover gasket on before installing the front cover and secure the bolts and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts while avoiding excessive tightness. The j 41476 front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476) allows operators to center the crankshaft front oil seal by aligning its tapered legs with front cover machined surfaces. Torque the engine front cover bolts along with the Oil Pan to front cover bolts at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The work process requires installation of the cmp sensor and new crankshaft front oil seal together with the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer.
