Begin 1500 series rear brake caliper replacement by inspecting brake master cylinder reservoir fluid before proceeding. Replace brake fluid if it exceeds the midpoint between full capacity and minimum limits. Drain fluid to match that midpoint. After vehicle support lift the vehicle up and take out the tire along with the wheel assembly. Apply cleaning solution to the brake hose fitting then insert a large c-clamp onto the caliper housing to compress the caliper piston fully back against the outboard pad before removing the clamp. Accommodate the brake pipe with caps or plugs in order to stop fluid leaking and prevent contamination. Remove the brake hose to caliper bolt but examine the copper gaskets to verify they do not stick to either hardware before discarding both gaskets and installing new gaskets. When removing guide pin bolts maintain control of the guide pin by using an open-end wrench that ensures the brake caliper remains untouched to minimize pulsation. Pull the brake caliper out of its mounting bracket position. The new brake caliper gets attached to its mounting bracket then thread guide pin bolting gets cleaned with brake parts cleaner followed by threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) thread application. Secure the guide pin bolts using hand tools but maintain grip on the pins to achieve 38 n.m (28 lb ft) torque. Replace the rubber cap from the brake hose fitting with two new copper gaskets before securing the brake hose by tightening the caliper bolt to 40 n.m (30 lb ft). Custom degassing of the hydraulic brake system must be performed after tire and wheel assembly installation and then reservoir fluid levels should be maintained with new brake fluid if the current amount falls short.
