  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on the 1500 Series on 2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV?
    A: To change the rear brake caliper on the 1500 series, inspect first the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; if it is higher than the mean point between the maximum-full and minimum allowable levels, drain until it is at that point. Lift and support the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Clean the brake hose fitting then use a large c-clamp over the caliper housing pressed against the back of the outboard pad till the piston is fully compressed as well. Cap or plug the brake pipe to prevent loss of fluid, then remove the brake hose to caliper bolt and lay the hose out of the way, and make sure the old copper gaskets are not left to the caliper or hose and dispose of the used ones. Undo the guide pin bolt by using hand tools just when pinching the guide pin by means of an open end wrench and then remove brake caliper from the mounting bracket. For installation, mount new brake caliper to the mounting bracket, clean the threads of the guide pin bolts with brake parts cleaner, then apply threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) before turning in threads. Again, you would have to use the hand tools to tighten the guide pin bolt to 38 n.m (28 lb.ft.) while you hold the guide pin at a particular point. Remove rubber cap form the brake hose fitting then insert 2 new copper gaskets and then attach brake hose to caliper bolt, also tighten to 40 n.m (30 lb ft). Bleed the hydraulic brake system, install the tire and wheel assembly, and, if needed, fill the master cylinder reservoir to the appropriate level using fresh brake fluid.
