• Q: How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on 2007 Cadillac STS?

  A: To de-activate the sir system before removing and replacing the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable, turned the ignition off, wait until the engine stops and then remove the key when the solutions are still cool. Before removing the Steering Column, or intermediate shaft from the steering gear, ensure the wheels of the vehicle are straight ahead and the Steering Column in the lock position in order to prevent the tearing of the sir coil assembly. Install Steering Column anti rotation pin along with (J 42640) or at least ensure that the Ignition Switch is in lock position. Remove the Steering Wheel off the Steering Shaft, pull the tilt lever straight out if used, then a lower trim cover is removed by removing 2 torx head screws, and an upper trim cover by removing 2 torx head screws. Remove the sir coil poultice, detach the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness, remove retaining ring. In case of replacement, discard the old sir coil. For installation check the wheels are straight ahead and the Steering Column is in the lock position once more. Do not remove the centering tab from the new sir coil before installation is accomplished. Mount the sir coil assembly with the horn tower at the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide the sir coil onto the steering and then firmly fixed peg the retaining ring in the slot. Remove and discard the centering tab of the new sir coil. Install the upper trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws and tighten to 1.5n.m (13 lb in), the lower trim cover with 2 torx(R) head screws tighten to the same specification. Make sure the tabs on the lower trim cover attach with the upper trim cover and snap them in place. For the vehicles with a tilt column, align and slide the tilt lever handle into the Steering Column till locks. Lastly, mount the Steering Wheel onto the shaft of the steering and enable the sir system.
