  • Q: How to replace the negative battery cable from the engine to the chassis on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: A starting point for battery negative cable replacement from engine to chassis requires the disconnect of a negative battery cable and vehicle height elevation. Vehicles with RPOs L61/LE5 and MN5 require removal of the engine harness ground nut before taking the engine harness ground terminal off the stud before proceeding with the negative battery cable ground terminal. To replace the battery negative cable ground terminal from the engine block RPOs L61/LE5 with M86 require removal of the engine harness ground nut and engine harness ground terminal from the stud followed by the stud and finally the negative battery cable ground terminal separation from the block. RPO LSJ requires users to remove the engine harness ground nut and the engine harness grounds followed by stud extraction and engine harness ground adjustment before separating the negative battery cable ground terminal from the engine block. First disconnect the negative battery cable ground terminal from its stud at both the side rail and the stud. Open the tape on the battery cable conduit to remove the cables' original wrapping before extracting the negative battery cable. When installing the cable position the negative battery cable into the conduit and secure it with tape around the positive/negative battery cable conduit . After installing the negative battery cable ground terminal on its stud position use the battery cable ground nut to fasten it then tighten the nut to 20 N.m (15 lb ft). When performing the installation of the RPO LSJ negative battery cable ground terminal position the ground terminal against the engine block followed by installing the ground terminal stud then tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). Use the engine harness ground nut to fix the engine harness grounds onto the stud then tighten it to 17 N.m (13 lb ft). To install the negative battery cable ground terminal on RPOs L61/LE5 with M86 models position it at the engine block and then attach and torque the stud to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). The engine harness ground terminal should connect to the stud using the engine harness ground nut which should be tightened 17 N.m (13 lb ft). Installing the ground terminal of the negative battery cable onto the stud should proceed the installation of the engine harness ground terminal and engine harness ground nut that requires tightening to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).
