  • Q: How to replace the inner CV Boot and CV Joint on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
    A: To replace the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot you will first hold the wheel drive shaft bar in a soft jawed vise. Using side cutters, remove and get rid of the small seal clamp, and using a flat-bladed tool, remove and get rid of the large seal retaining clamp. Dismount the seal from the cover of the tripot by the big diameter and slide it from the joint in the direction of the Axle Shaft. Remove excess grease from the tripot spider face and inside of the tripot housing, and then take off the tripot housing from the spider and shaft. Moving the retaining ring out of the groove on the wheel drive shaft bar, remove the spider assembly and the seal off the wheel drive shaft bar. Clean all parts propely using an appropriate solvent and make sure all the grease and contaminants are removed and dry with compressed air. Check the elements of the tripot joint and replace damaged parts. For the assembly, attach the small seal clamp to the seal without crimping, after which slide the inner seal to the wheel drive shaft bar such that the seal clamp is well seated in the seal groove. Insert the j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) in the small seal clamp, crimp it and measure the width of the clamp gap, it should not be more than 2.15 mm (0.085 in). Mount the tripot spider assembly onto the wheel drive shaft bar and firm it in position against the shoulder by either placing the retaining ring in the groove of the wheel drive shaft bar using suitable pliers. Add about half from the kit of the grease to the seal and rest to the tripot housing. Install the large clamp round the huge diameter of the seal starting off with and then connect the tripot housing to the tripot spider assembly to the wheel drive shaft bar. Place the large diameter of the seal onto the housing of tripot aligning the lip of the seal into the housing groove. Position the large seal retaining clamp on the seal and use j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) to close it and observe the gap dimension on the clamp ear and tighten it to get the gap dimension at 1.9 mm (5/64 in). At last, rotate the housing with a circular motion to emulsify the tripot joint's grease.
