2007 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain, sprockets, or tensioner on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The tools required to replace the Timing Chain and sprockets as well as tensioner can be found in the tensioner tool (J 45027). Tensioner tool (J 45027). First step is Camshaft cover removal followed by vehicle lift and support. After that remove the no. 1 cylinder Spark Plug. Tilt the Crankshaft from right to left until the no. 1 Piston reaches its top dead center (TDC) compression position then remove the engine front panel and let your vehicle settle. Unloading the Timing Chain starts with removing the tensioner and continues with removal of the fixed Timing Chain Guide access plug and then the guides. Afterwards install a 24 mm wrench to stop the camshafts from rotating. Remove exhaust and intake Camshaft sprocket bolts before removing all components: exhaust and intake Camshaft sprockets, Timing Chain, crankshaft sprocket, oil nozzle and bolt, balance shaft drive chain tensioner, adjustable balance shaft chain guide, small balance shaft drive chain guide, upper balance shaft drive chain guide. The upper balance shaft chain guide requires 10 n.m (89 lb in) torque to tighten its bolts. After installing the balance shaft drive chain the technician must align its color-coded links at the sprocket timing marks before adding the small balance shaft chain guide followed by the adjustable balance shaft drive chain guide then torquing their bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in). After rotating the plunger 90 degrees and compressing it with a paper clip inserted you should install the Timing Chain Tensioner while torquing its bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in). After removing the paper clip, install the oil nozzle and bolt and tighten it to 10 n.m (89 lb in). To put both sprockets in place start by setting the Crankshaft sprocket timing mark to 5 o'clock and allow the Timing Chain to pass through the cylinder head while placing the intake Camshaft sprocket at 2 o'clock position with an int diamond mark before manually tightening a new bolt. Guide the Timing Chain to travel through the Crankshaft and intake Camshaft sprocket locations before placing the Timing Chain Tensioner guide in position and tightening its bolt to 10 n.m (89 lb in). First install the exhaust Camshaft sprocket by aligning its colored link at exh triangle to the 10 o'clock position before hand-tightening a new bolt then installing the fixed Timing Chain Guide and tightening both guide bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Add sealant to the Timing Chain Guide bolt access hole plug and tighten it to 90 n.m (59 lb ft). Afterward, install the Timing Chain upper guide and tighten its bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in). A necessary inspection of the Timing Chain Tensioner should be conducted followed by a replacement if required. Using tools measure the assembly portion of the Timing Chain Tensioner. When the measurement shows that the Piston is not compressed follow the instructions in j 45027-2 and j 45027-1 . First wipe down the tensioner bore then add the compressed Piston assembly before checking the total length as 72 mm (2.83 in). If correct proceed to install the tensioner along with a 75 n.m (55 lb ft) torque setting. After using a proper tool to release the tensioner you should hold the Camshaft with a 24 mm wrench before tightening the new Camshaft bolts to 85 n.m (63 lb ft) together with a 30-deg twist. Move to the last step by installing the Camshaft cover before raising the vehicle and placing on the engine front cover while lowering the vehicle to connect the negative Battery Cable.
