2008 Cadillac SRX Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion on a right-hand drive on 2008 Cadillac SRX?
A: Rack And Pinion replacement for right-hand drive vehicles starts with turning the steering wheel to position the front wheels straight ahead then moving the Ignition Lock Cylinder into the locked position to clear the key. Place the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) through the Steering Column access hole to achieve hole locking. The front tire wheels need removal alongside the right wheelhouse panel and front air deflector. Place drain pans under appropriate locations to catch fluid discharge. Wheels must remain directly ahead and locking forces should be on the Steering Column before the intermediate shaft is detached from the Rack And Pinion stub shaft to protect operating parts. The technician should remove the lower intermediate Steering Shaft bolt to disconnect the lower intermediate Steering Shaft from the Rack And Pinion then disconnect the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. First remove the bolt that attaches the power steering Rack And Pinion inlet hose bracket before disconnecting both hoses from the Rack And Pinion. All-wheel drive vehicles require front differential housing support during the process. Start by loosening the right engine mount nut and raising the differential housing to clear Rack And Pinion bolts before removing the Rack And Pinion bolts and rearward left lower control arm nut and bolt. Steer the power steering Rack And Pinion through the space available at the left wheel opening. First install the new Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening then attach the rearward left side lower control arm nut and bolt before applying 180 n.m (133 lb ft) torque to Rack And Pinion bolts. Installation of awd vehicles requires front differential housing to be lowered then the right engine mount nut requires tighten to 80 n.m (59 lb ft). Following Brake Line and power steering hose connections to the Rack And Pinion the installer should tighten the left front Brake Line to 27 n.m (20 lb in) and secure the power steering Rack And Pinion inlet hose bracket bolt to 23 n.m (17 lb ft). Connect the Rack And Pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles and install the lower intermediate Steering Shaft to the Rack And Pinion. Then tighten the lower intermediate Steering Shaft bolt to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Clean all remaining power steering fluid and reinstall the front air deflector followed by installing the right side wheelhouse panel and the front tire and wheel assemblies. Finish the repair by removing the anti-rotation pin (J 42640), filling and bleeding both power steering and hydraulic brake systems before front toe adjustment.
