2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake shoes on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: To change brake shoes, first, lift and support the vehicle, then remove the tire and wheel unit, and next, unbolt the Brake Drum, then change brake shoes. Do not overstretch the adjuster spring, since an injury can be caused. Then take off the adjuster spring by disengaging the hook end of the adjuster spring from the tab on the adjuster actuator lever, and then releasing it from the Brake Shoe web hole. Do not continue to remove the adjuster actuator lever from pivot. By means of the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400), open the upper part of brake shoes and take off the adjuster assembly of brake shoes. Position the hook end of the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) under the universal spring and pull out lightly easing the Brake Shoe away from the shoe web hole while holding to pull out the trailing Brake Shoe. Release park brake cable at the park brake lever attached to the trailing shoe and do it again for the leading Brake Shoe. Take Brake Shoe lining thickness measurement, making sure it is not less than 0.5mm (0.020 in). Auspices of examination, if not, replace the brake shoes. Notice that the Brake Shoe contact surfaces of the Brake Backing Plate be treated with a thin layer brake lubricant of high-temperature silicone. When installing the top Brake Shoe, connect the universal spring of Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) with Brake Shoe web hole. You should then reinstall the park brake cable to the park brake lever mounted on the trailing Brake Shoe and thereafter install the trailing Brake Shoe in the similar process then go ahead and get the rear wheel properly in place, tightly secured dabei. Open up the top of the brake shoes, once more, with the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400), and then install the adjuster assembly and the adjuster actuator lever and make sure you have the proper engagement. Mount the adjuster spring so that the loop enters the ear hook of the actuator lever. Last but not least, re-adjust the drum brakes, mount the Brake Drum, the tire and wheel assembly, and lower the vehicle.
