Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2008 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: In order to replace the engine front cover, remove the crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump initially. Next, remove the front cover bolts (501), unlock the front cover (502) and gasket (503), release the gasket after that. Clean the engine front cover, and inspect it, then extract the oil seal (140), bolts (705, 738), camshaft position sensor (703), as well as the wire harness (737), and also remove an o-ring (704) from the sensor when necessary. For installation, it is recommended to apply 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of sealant on the engine block, lay it directly on the tabs of front cover gasket that reach the surface of Oil Pan. Make sure that the crankshaft oil seal is properly centered and all gaskets surfaces are scraped and clean of oil or dirt. Mounting the front cover gasket (503), front cover (502), and bolts (501) and tighten them finger tight, without overtightening. Use the j 41480 to position the front cover, tightening the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft), making sure the tapered legs are in line with the machined surfaces. Then, install the j 41476; then the crankshaft balancer bolt must be hand tight until snug. Tighten all the bolts of j 41480 and the engine front cover to pull 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After the tools are removed, the flatness of the surface of the Oil Pan should be checked between the front cover and engine block, and if it is not flush then it should be not more than 0.5mm (0.02 in) below flush. If alignment is fouled, repeat the procedure or even put a new front cover if necessary. Check the Camshaft Position Sensor o-ring seal (704) for any signs of damage, lubricate it with fresh engine oil and then install it onto the sensor (703) and then fit this onto the cover. Lastly, tie in the Camshaft Position Sensor wire harness (737) and screws (705, 738) with a 12 n.m (106 lb in) torque, then reinstall the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer.
