2008 Chevrolet Express 2500 Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on a 4L80-E/4L85-E automatic transmission on 2008 Chevrolet Express 2500?
A: The first step to replace a 4l80-e/4l85-e automatic transmission's park/neutral position switch begins by setting the parking brake along with shifting the transmission into neutral gear position. Start by elevating the vehicle and then disconnect the nut securing the transmission control lever to manual shaft before removing the control lever itself. First disconnect the electrical connectors from the switch before removing the bolts which secure the park/neutral position switch to the transmission while pulling the switch from the manual shaft. The manual shaft's outer surface needs filing when the switch fails to slide off unfettered due to existing burrs. When installing the switch hub flats must face the manual shaft flats while moving the switch down the shaft until the mounting bracket connects with the transmission bosses. Existing positive assurance brackets used in new switches eliminate the requirement for the neutral position adjustment tool during installation. Two bolts should secure the switch to the transmission by finger-tight thread tightening. Rest the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) on the switch making sure slots match tabs on the tool. Tighten the switch bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) torque after rotating the tool until the upper locator pin meets the switch slot. After tool removal check for the presence of any positive assurance bracket. Next feed the switch electrical connectors back to their mount while you slide the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft before tightening the control lever nut to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After lowering the vehicle down validate the switch functionality by confirming it starts the engine exclusively in p (Park) or n (Neutral) positions. Replace the switch when it cannot operate properly.
