In order to change the park/neutral position switch of 4l60-e/4l65-e/4l70-e automatic transmission, start by engaging the parking brake and moving the transmission to neutral. Lift the vehicle and work out the nut holding the manual shaft and the transmission control lever, and then remove the transmission control lever. First, disconnect electrical hooks from the switch and remove bolts holding the park/neutral position switch to the transmission then take out the switch from a manual shaft. If the switch does not slide off easily, sand the outer edge of the manual shaft to remove any burrs. For installation, place the switch hub flats on the manual shaft flats and slide the switch until the mounting bracket comes into contact with transmission's mounting bosses. In the event that a new switch is being installed then it will be accompanied with a positive assurance bracket hence obviating the need to use the neutral position adjustment tool. Place two bolts through the switch to the transmission; tighten finger tight. Pad the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) onto the switch with the slots matching against the tabs of the tool. Rotate the tool while coordinating the upper locator pin with the switch slot, and tighten the bolts up to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Take out the tool and, if need be, the positive assurance bracket. Reconnect the electrical connectors to switch, install transmission control lever onto manual shaft with nut, and tighten to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Finally, bring the vehicle down and verify the switch for its correct operation so that the engine starts only in p (Park) or n (Neutral) modes. If the switch does not work, replace it.
