2008 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch Assembly (LE5, L61) on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The first step to replace the compressor clutch assembly (LE5, L61) requires capping or taping the A/C Compressor ports to avoid pag oil loss and port contamination. The A/C Compressor must be extracted from the vehicle to be fixed in a fitting support apparatus. The j 37872 should hold the clutch assembly while using it to remove the retaining nut from the A/C Compressor shaft while keeping the clutch shim from falling out. The clutch plate needs removal before you can use the j 6083 tool to extract the clutch pulley snap ring retainer without applying pressure to the A/C Compressor shaft. Use an impact socket of appropriate size to protect the compressor shaft before removing the pulley. Then use the j 41816 tool to eliminate the clutch pulley. Use the j 6083 to separate the clutch coil snap ring retainer before you take out the clutch coil while making sure the threads and lip seals of the A/C Compressor shaft remain undamaged throughout the removal of the felt wick seal. Add the new felt wick shaft seal to the A/C Compressor, making sure the retainer lies flush with its housing and checking all surfaces for cleanliness before assembly. Position the clutch coil dimple to align with A/C Compressor casting notch before snapping in the clutch coil but making sure the snap ring sits fully in position. Install the clutch coil snap ring retainer with the j 6083 tool while making sure no strain affects the seal or pulley or outer bearing race. To install the clutch pulley onto the A/C Compressor you need a hydraulic press so the snap ring can be fully seated then use the j 6083 to install the clutch pulley snap ring retainer. Reinstall the clutch shim from previous removal and replace the wiring harness retaining screws with a torque of 2.3 n.m (22 lb in). Set the clutch plate onto the A/C Compressor while installing both the original clutch plate retaining nut and the j 37872 equipment handle which will stabilize the clutch for torqueing to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Check the air gap distance between the clutch pulley and clutch plate should fall between 0.3-0.7 mm (0.012-0.028 in). The technician should switch to a different shim from the service kit to achieve the proper specification. Install the new manufacturer-supplied nut in place of the original clutch plate retaining nut using a j 37872 tool to achieve a torque setting of 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Remove the A/C Compressor from its support fixture after which you should take off its port caps but keep the compressor within the vehicle before performing leak tests using j 39400-a.
