2008 Chevrolet HHR Thermostat Housing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine coolant thermostat housing for the LE5-2.4L or L61-2.2L engines on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: To replace the engine coolant Thermostat housing for the le5-2.4l or l61-2.2l engines, you have to drain the cooling system first. Plate off the air cleaner assembly, followed by the air cleaner bracket nuts and bracket. After that, remove the Exhaust Heat Shield studs and the heater. The coolant will be drained from engine block through Water Pump drain and also tighten the drain bolt. Lower the vehicle and pull the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector if fitted with an automatic transaxle; carry the hesitant Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector clip from the Thermostat housing. If using manual transaxles, unplug the ect sensor electrical connector and remove the ect sensor. Relocating the radiator outlet hose clamp, pull off the radiator outlet hose from the Thermostat housing. Reposition heater inlet and outlet hose clamps and remove hoses from the Thermostat housing pipes. Lift up and support the vehicle, then unbolt the Thermostat housing bolts and twist the water transfer pipe as you pull to separate the water transfer pipe from the Water Pump. Take off the Thermostat housing and water transfer pipe if needed and throw the o-ring seals if applicable. Take off the Thermostat and the Thermostat housing cover bolts and cover if needed, making sure all mess and thread sealant is removed from the engine Coolant Temperature Sensor and bolt hole if replacing the housing. Replace the Thermostat housing cover o ring seal in the recess groove in replacement or the Thermostat if needed. Install the Thermostat housing cover bolts with a torque application of 10 n.m (89 lb in) and fit a new Thermostat housing to engine gasket on the Thermostat housing. Mount Thermostat housing assembly, the seals for water feed pipe lightly oiled. Mount new o-ring seals on the water feed pipe ensuring they are lubricated with coolant only and insert the water feed pipe into Thermostat housing with the locator tab aligned with the Thermostat housing align the water pipe, water pump and seat the water feed o-ring seal forcing it in toward the Water Pump without damaging it. Mount the Thermostat against the engine, apply the Thermostat housing bolts to tighten them to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Lower the car and attach the heater inlet, and outlet hoses to the pipes of the Thermostat housing, installing hose clips in their proper place. Mount the radiator outlet hose and its clamp. If re-installing the old sensor, coat its threads as well with sealant before putting the ect sensor into place and tightening to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Connect the ect sensor electrical connector for either type transaxle and snap the ho2s electrical connector clip to the Thermostat housing. Make certain the car is level, check to ensure that the drain valves at the radiator and Water Pump are closed, and fill the system. Stop the lowering of the vehicle, put the Exhaust Heat Shield and studs, fasten the studs with the torque of 22 n.m (16 lb ft). Place the air cleaner bracket and nuts back into its position and tighten them to 10 n.m (89 lb in), and then install the air cleaner assembly. Finally, ensure that the repair has been completed and check for leakage.
