2008 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain tensioner on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: In order to change the Timing Chain Tensioner, you would start by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable. Next, take out the camshaft cover and remove the Timing Chain Tensioner then the seal off the tensioner. Check the Timing Chain Tensioner for damages; if the tensioner, o-ring seal, or washer is damaged, replace them according to the requirements. Check the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly from one end to another; a new tensioner is to be provided in its fully compressed non-active form with a length of 72mm (2.83 in) from one end to the other. When the tensioner is not in the compressed state, remove the Piston assembly out of the body of the Timing Chain Tensioner, install the j 45027-2 into a vise and insert the notch end of the Piston assembly into the j 45027-2. Turn the ratchet cylinder into the Piston using the j 45027-1. Check the bore of the tensioner body for dirt and clutters and damages and apply a lint-free piece of cloth to clean out any contaminations. Put the compressed Piston assembly back in to the Timing Chain Tensioner body up to the point that it will reach the bottom of the bore without being compressed against the bottom. The tensioner should be around 72mm (2.83 in) long end to end. If not, repeat the previous steps. Take out all dirt and debris in the Timing Chain Tensioner threaded hole in the cylinder head. Install the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly and tighten to 75 n.m (55 lb ft). To release the Timing Chain Tensioner was to pressurize it 2mm (0.079 in), with the use of an appropriate tool with a rubber tip, with a sharp jolt diagonally down to therefreclude the tensioner. Finally, reinstall the camshaft cover and reapply the negative Battery Cable.
