2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the torsion bar and support assembly (Link Style) on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: To swop out the Torsion Bar and support assembly (link style) first lift and support the vehicle. Mount the Torsion Bar unloading/loading tool (J 36202) to the adjustment arm and the support assembly. Using the Torsion Bar unloading/loading tool (J 36202), pull the adjustment arm bolt with extra tension to take off the load from the adjustment bolt and adjuster nut. Establish the reference point, relative to the adjustment bolt to the support, by determining the number of turns that it takes to remove it. First, remove the adjustment bolt and adjuster nut from the support assembly; then remove the Torsion Bar unloading / loading tool (J 36202) to make the Torsion Bar unload. Slide forward the Torsion Bar to remove the adjustment arm from the support assembly. Then take out the upper link mounting bolt and nut from the link, then the Torsion Bar support assembly. Notice that the left as well as the right torsion bars are not interchangeable. Take the vehicle's Torsion Bar out. For installation, align the Torsion Bar to the lower Control Arm and install it on the support assembly. Mount the upper link nut and bolt into the link, and use the hand wrench to tighten the nut to 95 n.m [70 lb ft]. Leave the adjustment arm here in the support assembly followed by the adjuster bolt and adjustment nut. Push the adjustment arm on the Torsion Bar back until it is fully tucked into the arm. Replace the adjustment arm and support assembly, Torsion Bar unloading/loading tool (J 36202), install the same on the adjustment arm so that it can increase the tension on the adjustment arm to load the Torsion Bar. Line up the reference marks and turn the adjuster bolt to the same number of turns it was removed. Lastly, remove the Torsion Bar unloading/loading tool from the support assembly, take away the safety stand, lower the vehicle, and measure the z height.
