2008 GMC Envoy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain, sprocket, and tensioner on 2008 GMC Envoy?
A: Starting the camshaft Timing Chain sprocket and tensioner replacement requires first removing both the camshaft cover and engine front cover. Secure the Timing Chain Tensioner shoe with a tee after releasing its tension through shoe movement. Uninstall the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt along with the actuator before continuing with the intake camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket operation and finishing the Timing Chain and crankshaft sprocket removal. To reach the Timing Chain Tensioner parts begin by removing the cylinder head access hole plugs alongside the Timing Chain Tensioner shoe bolt, the shoe, the tensioner guide bolts, the guide, and the tensioner bolts before pulling off the tensioner. First tighten the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) before you add the tensioner guide bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in) and end with the tensioner shoe bolts torqued to 26 n.m (19 lb ft). Fasten the cylinder head access hole plugs securely with 5 n.m (44 lb in) torque. Position the j 44221 tool with camshaft flats facing up as number 1 piston moves to top dead center at 12 o'clock crank position. Insert both crankshaft sprocket and intake camshaft sprocket into the Timing Chain arrangement while directing the Timing Chain dark link to match the intake camshaft sprocket timing mark. Guide the Timing Chain through the head opening before fixing it onto the crankshaft sprocket and placing the dark link at the timing mark. The j 44221 tool might need temporary removal to properly align the camshaft hex when rotating the camshaft for correct positioning. First attach the intake camshaft sprocket to its respective location on the camshaft then apply the washer followed by bolting it in place. Add the exhaust camshaft actuator to the Timing Chain and match the dark link to the actuator timing mark before mounting it to the exhaust camshaft. Crank the exhaust camshaft actuator bolt to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) during the first pass followed by utilizing the j 36660-a to torque the bolt another 135 degrees. Initial tightening of the intake camshaft sprocket bolt reaches 20 n.m (15 ft lb) while final tightening requires the j 36660-a to apply torque for 100 degrees. Unclipping the Timing Chain Tensioner tee will recreate tension before j 44221 removal. Check that the chain's dark lines fall into position with the sprocket marking points. Afterward install the engine front cover together with the camshaft cover.
