• Q: How to replace the Outer CV Boot and CV Joint (FE1/FE3) on 2009 Cadillac DTS?

  A: To replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot (FE1/FE3), you first remove the big boot retaining clamp from the cv joint using side cutter and disposing in the bin before removing the small boot retaining clamp from the half shaft bar. Remove outboard boot from the cv joint outer race and slide outboard boot toward the cv joint along the bar. Remove the grease from the face of cv joint inner race and apply the j 8059 to spread the ears on the race retaining ring before disassembly of the cv joint assembly from the bar. Remove the boot from the bar and tap gently with brass drift and hammer on the cv joint cage in attempt to withdraw the six chrome frigids balls. Take the cv joint cage and the cv joint inner race at a 90-degree angle relative to the cv joint outer-race' centerline and align the windows with the lands of the outer race prior to removal. Turn inner race 90 degrees and swing it into cage window for removal. The inner and outer races along with the cv joint cage and balls clean with cleaning solvent making certain that the old grease and contaminants are also washed away before drying the parts. In assembly, put the new swage ring on the small end boot of joint and slide both onto the halfshaft bar putting the boot into the boot groove . Secure the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly into tool j41048, aligning the boot neck to the bottom die, and check for pinch points prior to inserting and tightening the bolts by hand until snug. In cheek boot at the swage ring, align outboard boot, boot grooves, and swage ring, then tighten every bolt of j 41048 , 180 degrees at a time, with a ratchet wrench. Use the service kit for applying a light lubricant coat on the ball grooves on the inner race and outer race, connect the inner race to the cage by holding it at a 90-degree angle. Mount the cage and inner race on the outer race and fit them into each other with courtesy of chrome balls until all the six are on. Half fill the out board boot with grease from the service kit and then grease the cv joint with the other half into the cv joint before pushing the cv joint onto the half shaft bar with the retaining ring being seated on it. Make sure that the outboard boot is not dimpled or stretched and adjust it manually if needed. Slide the large diameter of the outboard boot over cv joint outer race and crimp the boot retainer clamp with j36510, breaker bar, torque wrench at 176 nm (130 lb ft). Lastly, inspect the clamp gap dimension at the clamp ear and tighten it, if the gap is more than 1.9 mm.
