• Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?

  A: First, check the brake master cylinder auxiliary reservoir to determine the level of the brake fluid. If the level is over halfway between maximum along full to minimum allowable, drain brake fluid until the halfway point. Pull the rear trim plate off the console and take the tension out from the park brake cables by winding the adjusting nut all of the way off. Lift and support the vehicle, pull off the tire and wheel assembly. Mount and atte hand tension 2wheel nuts to the opposite wheel studs to hold the rotor onto the hub. Free cover of the park brake cable end from the lever on the caliper and the retaining tabs holding the park brake cable on the caliper to the bracket. Compress the caliper piston into the caliper bore with a large c clamp, without pushing it beyond 1 mm (0.039 in) of piston movement. Expose the brake hose-to-brake caliper bolt and brake hose, discarding the 2 brake hose gaskets , then remove the c-clamp. Plug the brake hose fitting and brake caliper inlet port to avoid fluid leakage and contamination. With the wrench on the flats of the caliper guide pins remove brake caliper guide pin bolts, and take the brake caliper off the bracket. Check the brake caliper guide pins for movement and the status of guide pin boots. Replace any restricted, loose, seized, or damaged. Under the new brake caliper install it to the caliper bracket and then secure the brake caliper guide pin bolts to 35 nm (26 lb ft). Insert the park brake cable end fitting into the bracket presented by the caliper and attach the park brake cable end at the lever on the caliper by using new copper brake hose gaskets. In the brake hose assembly and fitting bolt & gaskets, bolt the brake hose to the caliper, and tighten the bolt to 40 nm (30 lb-ft). Bleed the hydraulic brake system, remove the wheel nuts holding the brake rotor, and mount the tire and wheel assembly. Another 2/3 of the pedal travel distance, slowly release it and repeat the pressure until a firm pedal is achieved. Just lower the vehicle then with the engine off gradually press the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of the brake pedal travel distance. Lastly, align the tension of the park brake cable, and fasten the console rear trim plate back.
