  • Q: How to replace the outer CV Boot and CV Joint on 2010 Buick Lucerne?
    A: To remove the wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot, remove the large seal retainer clamp from the cv joint with a side cutter and discard, with the small seal retainer clamp from the halfshaft bar. Isolate the outboard seal from the cv joint outer race and slide off the bar . Clean grease off the cv joint's inner race , then apply j 8059 to spread the ears of the race retaining ring prior to removing the cv joint assembly from the bar. Remove seal from bar and safely knock on chrome alloyball cage with brass drift and hammer removing cage down to all chrome alloy balls. At 90 degrees with the centerline of the outer race and the windows with the lands of the outer race before removing, position the cv joint cage and inner race ; position the cv joint cage and inner race at 90 degrees with the.center.line.of the outer race and with the .windows with the lands of the outer race before removing. Rotate the inner race at 90 degrees to allow for alignment with the cage windows, and pivot in the cage. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, cv joint cage, and balls with cleaning solvent such that all old grease and contaminants will be removed and subsequently dried all parts. To assemble, position the new swage ring on top of the small end of the joint seal and slide them over the halfshaft bar. Position the small end of the seal into the seal groove and secure j 41048 on the vice, with the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly in the right place. Panachange the top of the seal neck of the bottem die by using the indicator and put the half top of j 41048 to john with the lower half of the bottem and make sure there is no pintsh at the seal before insertijg and tightening the bolt by hand untlil tigit. Line up the seal, the swage ring and halfshaft bar and then torque individual bolts of j 41048, 180 degrees at a time, using ratchet wrench. Apply a light lubrication from the service kit, on the groves of the outer race and inner race then place the inner race through the cage by holding it 90° from the center line. Line up the cage and inner race of the inner race with the outer race and put in cage and inner race in the outer race . Populate the chrome balls, filling the cv joint with grease from the service kit, while pressing the conusing cv joint onto halfshaft bar until the retaining ring is seated. Make sure there are no dimples or stretching on the outboard seal and tight it manually if there is need. Slide the large diameter of the outboard seal with the large seal retaining clamp level over the cv joint outer race and crimp the clamp using j 35910, a breaker bar and a torque wrench to 176 nm (130 lb ft) checking the gap dimension at the clamp ear and add to the torque over until a gap dimension of 2.60 mm (0.102 in) is achieved.
