Chevrolet Cobalt Steering Column Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering column on Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: The first step to replacing the Steering Column involves moving the Steering Wheel straight forward then taking out the wheel itself. First remove column trim covers until you disconnect the head lamp/turn signal harness connector and wiper/washer harness connector and sir coil harness connector from the sir coil module assembly. Start by detaching the sir coil module assembly. Continuation follows with disconnecting the ignition lock cylinder harness connector alongside removal of the ignition switch harness connector and theft deterrent control module electrical connector (if present). Stab the intermediate shaft to the Steering Column for future assembly alignment before removing the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and pulling the intermediate shaft free from the Steering Column. You need to remove the vehicle's Steering Column by disconnecting both eps control module power feed harness connectors and small harness connector followed by unbolting the Steering Column pivot bolt and mounting hardware. Separate the ignition lock cylinder case from its position on the Steering Column. Installation requires marking the new column with the duplicated scribe then installing the ignition lock cylinder case before positioning the Steering Column inside the vehicle. Start each bolt with your hand before tightening the bolts sequentially to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Insert the eps control module power feed alongside its small harness through the previously marked spots before slotting the intermediate shaft onto the Steering Column while tightening a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 34 n.m (25 lb ft). The installation requires connecting the following connectors in order: ignition lock cylinder harness, ignition switch harness and theft deterrent control module electrical connector if present. Reattach the sir coil with its module assembly while reinstalling the wiper/washer and head lamp/turn signal harness connectors. Conclude by installing upper and lower trim covers with the Steering Wheel followed by theft deterrent module programming if you put in a new module during repair.
