Chevrolet Cobalt Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End on Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Starting the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End replacement process requires wheel/tire removal from the front part of the vehicle. First loosen the inner tie rod nut of the rack and pinion system before you remove and discard the outer Tie Rod End nut. The steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) allows workers to disconnect the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle while counting complete rotations for separation. Move the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End off the rack and pinion inner tie rod followed by discarding the inner tie rod nut. Thorough inspection of the rack and pinion inner tie rod threads must happen before installation to determine if repair or replacement is needed. After installing a new rack and pinion inner tie rod nut thread the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End onto the rack and pinion inner tie rod while matching the number of complete rotations recorded during removal. At the Steering Knuckle attach the rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End followed by installation of a new rack and pinion outer Tie Rod End nut which needs tightening to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) while making a 90-degree turn. To complete the repair replace the new rack and pinion inner tie rod nut and put back the front tire/wheel then perform front toe adjustment.
