Chevrolet Express 1500 Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on Chevrolet Express 1500?
A: In order to replace the air bag clock spring, disable sir system first. Make sure both wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead, and that the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is in place or the ignition switch is in lock position. Pull the tilt lever straight out, if exists, then remove 2 torx(R) head screws attaching the lower trim cover, and remove it. Pull the Steering Wheel off the Steering Shaft. Next, you need to remove 2 torx(R) head screws from upper trim cover and take off that cover also. Remove the wire harness straps from the column wire harness of the Steering Wheel, then remove the retaining ring and the air bag clock spring off the Steering Shaft. In replacing, dispose off the old air bag clock spring. For installation, contact tires or check a second time if the wheels are straight ahead and the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) or ignition switch for use in (LOCK). Position the new air bag clock spring assembly to the horn tower of the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide the air bag clock spring to the Steering Shaft assembly, and firmly seat the retaining ring into the groove. Take centering tab from new air bag clock spring and take up trim cover and install upper; use 2 torx(R) head screws, tighten to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Mount the lower trim cover to the fuel tank with 2 torx(R) head screws in such a way that the tabs interlock properly, and tighten the screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). If so, align and slide the tilt lever handle to the steering column until it locks the steering column; then, install the Steering Wheel on the Steering Shaft. Finally, enable the sir system.
