The sir system needs to be disabled before removing the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable. Before work begins use the j-42640 (
Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin) to stabilize the
Steering Wheel so it faces forward to protect the sir system from damage. Disconnect all parts of the steering assembly keeping the wheel and front tires still before unfastening the components. Carriage wheel alignment must be verified before installing j-42640 or setting the ignition switch to lock position. Begin by extracting the Steering Wheel from the
Steering Shaft followed by removing the tilt lever on columns that support column tilting and disconnecting all Steering Column trim covers. Escape the retaining ring while you detach the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness and after that remove the air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft. Installation requires both straight wheels and a correctly positioned j-42640 pin. The new air bag clock spring assembly must receive an accurate center placement; discard the centering tab after final installation. Waiting to detach the centering tab until you reach the final stage of installation. Place the air bag clock spring assembly on top of the turn signal cancel cam assembly horn tower and slide the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly before forcing the retaining ring into position in its groove. You should remove any centering tabs before discarding them. Reattach the Steering Column trim covers before positioning the tilt lever into the Steering Column when matched with applicable conditions and installing the Steering Wheel to the Steering Shaft. To complete installation remove the j-42640 pin then enable the sir system.
