Chevrolet Impala Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube on Chevrolet Impala?
A: To replace the Rack And Pinion boot and breather tube off the vehicle, start the procedure by first removing the outer tie rod using the keystone clamp pliers (J 22610). Then, take out the hexagon jam nut of the inner tie rod assembly and Tie Rod End clamp of the Rack And Pinion boot out. Use side cutters to remove and throw away the boot clamp from the Rack And Pinion boot. If there is a breather tube, note where it is on the gear assembly before removing the Rack And Pinion boot. Inspect the inner tie rod for corrosion or contamination after removing the boot. If none pointed out, repair. You need to remove the Rack And Pinion boot and the breather tube if it is there. For assembly, replace the old boot clamp with a new one onto the Rack And Pinion boot and lubricate the inner tie rod assembly and the Rack And Pinion gear assembly before replacing the old Rack And Pinion boot with a new one on the inner tie rod assembly respectively. If there is a breather tube, align it with the marked location and the molded nipple from the Rack And Pinion boot. Make sure the Rack And Pinion boot is not twisted or puckered; adjust if necessary prior to installing the boot clamp by using the keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) and crimping. Pinch the pliers together on the Rack And Pinion boot in order to attach the Tie Rod End clamp to the Rack And Pinion boot and then install the hexagon jam nut onto the inner tie rod assembly.
