To replace the Rack And Pinion, first isolate the
Steering Wheel in a straight position using the j-42640 (Steering Column Anti-rotation Pin) to avoid rotation that may damage the sir system. Lift and support the vehicle, then put a drain pan under. After that, remove the tire and wheel assemblies, lower pinch bolt from the stub shaft of the power Rack And Pinion, and the intermediate
Steering Shaft from the stub shaft. Jack up the rear of the frame using jackstands and remove both
Tie Rod Ends from the
Steering Knuckles before removing the rear frame bolts. Bring down the rear of the frame gently and do not destroy engine parts. Unclip the power steering pressure and return hoses from the power Rack And Pinion, and then back the power Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and nuts out after which you can extract it through the left wheel opening. To install, install the new power Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening and attach it using the mounting bolts and nuts and tighten them to 90 nm (66 lb ft). Inspect and, if necessary, replace the o-ring seals on the
Power Steering Hoses, lubricating them before installation.replace the power steering pressure hose and return hoses, lift the frame to its place, and bolt the rear frame. Reconnect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles then install the intermediate Steering Shaft to the power Rack And Pinion stub shaft in a bolt tightened with lower pinch to 48 nm (35 lb ft). Install the intermediate Steering Shaft seal, reinstall the tire and wheel assemblies, remove the drain pan, lower the vehicle, and replace the j-42640 pin. Fill the power steering system with fluid and bleed the system, check for leaks and a front edge alignment.
