    Q:
How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion pitman shaft and cover assembly from the steering gear on GMC C2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
First, you should take out the stub shaft housing before servicing or fixing the Rack And Pinion (670 Gear). At this stage, unscrew the Pitman Arm from the Rack And Pinion after ensuring the pitman shaft is straight in the center to prevent lodging while re-installing it. Do this step by cleaning both the pitman shaft and the housing with a wire brush. Rotate the stub shaft using a wrench until it stops at every point, count the number of rotations and then turn it back half of that number. First, get rid of the pitman shaft cover bolts (1) from the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3) and afterwards the lash adjuster nut (2). Remove the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3) and take out the o-ring (4) that is under the pitman shaft cover in the Rack And Pinion housing assembly. For assembly, first install a new o-ring (4) around the pitman shaft cover and next place the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3) into the Rack And Pinion housing assembly. Put on the lash adjuster nut (2) around the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3), remembering the proper approach to fasteners and then install the pitman shaft cover bolts (1), tightening them to 62 nm (46 ft. Lbs.). The last step is to add the Pitman Arm and the stub shaft housing back to the steering system.

    Q:
How to Remove and Install the Rack and Pinion Pitman Arm from the Steering Gear on GMC C2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Unplug the Pitman Arm from the Rack And Pinion and then remove the pitman and side covers. Lightly scrub the end of the pitman shaft and use a wire brush to clean both the splines on the shaft and the Rack And Pinion housing too. Take the pitman shaft boot (3) off the Rack And Pinion housing (1) carefully so as not to damage the housing bore and then take out the pitman shaft dust seal (3) and the pitman shaft retaining ring (2) using j 4245. Detach the back up washer (3) and pry the pitman shaft seal (2) from the Rack And Pinion housing (1) using a screwdriver, be sure to check and remove any burrs inside the housing as required. Push the bone j 6278 into the top hole of the Rack And Pinion housing (1) and drive out the needle bearing inside the housing (2). First, put j 6278 through the needle bearing (2) into the Rack And Pinion housing (1) until the shoulder fits against the housing. Put grease on the pitman shaft seal (2) and back up washer (3) and then use j 6219 to secure the pitman shaft seal onto the Rack And Pinion housing (1), ending with the back up washer. Put on the pitman shaft retainer ring (2) to the Rack And Pinion housing (1) with j 4245, grease the dust seal after putting it on and then attach it (2) to the gear housing (1). In the end, add the pitman shaft boot (3) to the Rack And Pinion housing (1), connect the pitman shaft and side cover and finish by attaching the Pitman Arm to the Rack And Pinion.
