Chevrolet Impala Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on Chevrolet Impala?
A: To service and repair the Steering Knuckle you should firstly raise and properly support the car, and remove the tire and wheel assembly. Next is the removal of the front wheel drive shaft bearing. Then remove the front lower control arm ball stud-to-knuckle cotter pin and nut. Use the j 41820 ball joint/stud separator (J 41820) to separate the front lower control arm stud from the front Steering Knuckle and then use the j 24319-b universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) to pull the outer Tie Rod End from the Steering Knuckle. Remove the bolts connecting the strut to the knuckle before taking the knuckle out of the vehicle and scribe the strut to the knuckle. For installation, reinstall the knuckle to the vehicle and fasten the bolts that hold the strut on the knuckle, tightening them to 122 nm (90 ft. Lbs.). Then, install the outer tie rod to the Steering Knuckle and link the ball stud on the front lower control arm to the knuckle and fasten it using the front lower control arm ball stud nut, which should be tightened to 20 nm + 120° (15 ft. Lbs. + 120°). Position the slots in the nut with the cotter pin hole without loosening the nut. Put on the front lower control arm, ball stud, cotter pin, then the front wheel drive shaft bearing, after that the tire and wheel assembly. Finally, lower the vehicle.
