Chevrolet Lumina Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on Chevrolet Lumina?
    A:
Service and repair of the Oil Pan begins with disconnecting the battery's ground (negative) cable. Remove engine mount struts from both the engine and the Drive Belt. The first step includes unbolting the A/C Compressor before moving it to position. Start by installing the universal engine support fixture (J28467-B) together with engine support adapters (J28467-9OA) and engine support adapter leg set (J36462-A) before lifting and supporting the vehicle's weight. First drain the engine oil through the right (rear) exhaust manifold and disconnect the exhaust manifold pipe. Place the vehicle in the raised position then disconnect the Starter motor and oil level sensor wiring harness and wake the transaxle mount lower nuts and engine mount lower nuts along with the transaxle brace from the Oil Pan. First use the engine support fixture to lift the engine up and gain access to the Oil Pan. Afterward remove the engine mount bracket containing both the mount and the bracket from the Oil Pan. Use the torque wrench adapter (J39505) to remove the right (rear) Oil Pan side bolts first then proceed with the left (front) side bolts and Oil Pan retaining bolts until the Oil Pan can be removed. Before installing the rear main bearing cap apply gm p/n 1234579 or equivalent sealer to both sides of its surface after cleaning the engine block gasket and Oil Pan properly. Position the Oil Pan Gasket and Oil Pan first. Then tighten the Oil Pan retaining bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) but use the torque wrench adapter (J39505) to torque the left (front) Oil Pan side bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) and the right (rear) Oil Pan side bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Place the engine mount bracket with engine mount on the Oil Pan then use an engine support fixture to lower the engine before tightening engine mount lower nuts together with transaxle mount lower nuts while adding the transaxle brace to the Oil Pan. After reattaching the Starter motor and re-joining the oil level sensor wiring harness follow up with exhaust manifold pipe attachment to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. The next steps require the A/C Compressor installation together with Drive Belt and engine mount struts followed by engine oil fill-up and battery ground cable connection. The technician must first remove the universal engine support fixture (J28467-B), engine support adapters (J28467-9OA), and engine support adapter leg set (J36462-A).
