  Q: How to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube on Chevrolet Lumina?

  A: Service boot clamp installer referred to j 22610 will be used to replace the Rack And Pinion Boot and breather tube off the vehicle. Start by taking off the outer tie rod, and then remove the hex jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly . Next, remove the tie rod end clamp from Rack and Pinion Boot and use side cutters to remove boot clamp from Rack and Pinion Boot, disposing of the boot clamp. Before pulling out the breather tube or Rack and Pinion Boot , mark the breather tube's position on the gear assembly. Go ahead and take off the rack and pinon boot and the breather tube . To assemble, replace a boot clamp with a new one onto the Rack and Pinion Boot. Prior putting in the Rack and Pinion Boot, grease the inner tie rod assembly and the Rack And Pinion gear assembly. Mount the Rack and Pinion Boot onto the inner tie rod assembly, aligning the breather tube with the mark which was left when taking off and the molded nipple of Rack and Pinion Boot. Make sure the Rack and Pinion Boot is fitted into the groove of the gear assembly and does not twist or pucker. Mount the Rack and Pinion Boot on the inner tie rod assembly and use the j 22610 to mount the boot clamp on Rack and Pinion Boot , apply crimping to the boot clamp . Pinch the pliers on the Rack and Pinion Boot to install the tie rod end clamp, then install the hex jam nut to the inner tie rod assembly.
