Chevrolet Metro Water Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on Chevrolet Metro?
A: Before starting Water Pump work you must disconnect the battery negative terminal and empty the engine cooling system. Take out the air cleaner unit and a/c compressor suction pipe holder when it is present. The first step is to loosen but not remove the four bolts holding the Water Pump Pulley before hoisting and supporting the vehicle. Sever the belt drive from the a/c compressor by releasing its tensioner pulley before removing the right lower splash shield. Spin the generator bolt while shifting the generator to take off its Drive Belt along with the Water Pump. Remove the Crankshaft Pulley and continue by removing the Water Pump Pulley matched bolt set (total number is four) and the Timing Belt afterward. Finally, disconnect the oil level indicator guide tube. Take out the Water Pump mounting bolts and nuts to extract the Water Pump with its rubber seals and upper generator adjusting bracket from the Water Pump (one bolt). Check and clean both pump components before testing the Water Pump for proper operation. Replace the pump if needed. Place a new gasket on the engine block before installing the Water Pump with mounting bolts which require 13 nm tightening torque. Place new Water Pump seals before attaching the upper generator adjustment bracket using a bolt that tightens to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). Put back the oil level indicator (dipstick) guide tube and Timing Belt followed by setting the Water Pump Pulley in place with finger-tight bolts on four mounting points. Put the Crankshaft Pulley in place and connect the Water Pump/generator Drive Belt to all three pulleys before fixing it to the crankshaft and Water Pump. Secure the a/c compressor Drive Belt by putting on the lower generator plate first then tightening the bolts to 89 inch lbs. Fit the right lower splash shield and lower the car. Then use a torque wrench to fasten the Water Pump Pulley bolts at 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Set the Water Pump/generator Drive Belt proper tension at 98 n (22 lbs.) or 6 to 8 mm (0.25 - 0.32 inch) range when the upper generator bolt reaches 23 nm torque (17 ft. Lbs.). Last put back the a/c compressor suction pipe bracket when present and both the air cleaner assembly and negative Battery Cable.
