Chevrolet Prizm Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the Steering Column and Steering Wheel with Tilt on Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The following tools are essential to perform service or repair of a steering wheel and column with tilt operations: Steering Wheel Puller (J 1859-A). Start by turning off the SIR system and positioning the vehicle's front wheels straight ahead while locking the steering column in its position to avoid alignment issues and SIR coil assembly damage. Start by disconnecting the inflatable restraint steering wheel module and then disconnect the horn electrical connector followed by cruise control electrical connector if your vehicle has it. Use a marker to place matchmarks on both the steering wheel and main shaft before extracting the steering wheel retaining nut. The J1859-A bolts should not exceed 13 mm (0.5 inch) depth when installing the screws to protect against SRS coil assembly damage. The Steering Wheel Puller (J 1859-A) should be used to eliminate the steering wheel. First line up the matchmarks before mounting the steering wheel and tightening the retaining nut to a torque of 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Reattach the horn electrical connector followed by the cruise control electrical connector if installed before you can install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Enable the SIR system after completing the wheel alignment step.
