  Q: How to Properly Service and Replace the Idle Control Valve on GMC Jimmy?

  The replacement work for the Idle Control Valve requires a starting point of turning off the ignition while also removing the air cleaner outlet resonator. The Idle Control Valve harness connector should first disconnect followed by screw removal from the Idle Control Valve mounting points to extract the valve assembly together with its o-ring from the Throttle Body assembly. Clean the Idle Control Valve o-ring seating area along with pintle seat and air conduit through application of carburetor cleaner on a brush parts while avoiding methyl ethyl ketone and similar strong solvents. Any visibility of shiny spots on the pintle and seat does not prove shaft misalignment because vital cleaning needs to be performed on the Throttle Body when excess build-up exists in the air channel. The maintenance requires use of a new o-ring because replacing the original one would be inappropriate. New Idle Control Valve installation requires an exact replacement to the original component since application-dependent pintle dimensions and shapes need to match. Use your finger to retract the pintle then check if the distance between the mounting flange and valve pintle is greater than 28 mm (1-1/8 in). Use clean engine oil to lubricate the new Idle Control Valve o-ring while inserting it through the o-ring into the Throttle Body assembly by matching the mounting holes on the Throttle Body assembly to the flange holes. Before attaching Idle Control Valve screws with thread locking material gm p/n 1052624 or equivalent you must wash the screw threads and apply thread locking material which will be tightened to 3 n.m (27 lb in). Reset the Idle Control Valve through the ignition cycle with engine off by starting the on position for 5 seconds and then moving to the off position for 10 seconds. After this procedure stop the ignition restart the engine. Reattach both the Idle Control Valve harness connector and reinstall the air cleaner outlet resonator. Complete the procedure by starting the engine while inspecting its correct idle speed.
