What does the service of the engine control module (ECM) typically involve on GMC Safari?

Service of the powertrain control module (PCM) leads to two main options which are both pcm replacement and eeprom electrically erasable programmable read-only memory programming. The replacement process requires checking the pcm to verify the accuracy of the selected component. Confirm the replacement part before proceeding with pcm removal to replace it with the new service pcm. Internal pcm damage can be prevented by switching off the ignition before switching power to the pcm through any of battery cables, pcm pigtails, pcm fuses or jumper cables. The surfaces of the pcm connector need to be cleared of any debris and pcm module connector gaskets must be properly installed to avoid contaminant entry. Programming of the new pcm is mandatory for installation. Start the uninstallation sequence by detaching the pcm harness connectors only after switching off the ignition to prevent any harm. After freeing the spring latch on the pcm you should elevate the pcm from its pcm mounting tray to remove it out of the engine compartment. Reposition the pcm inside the mounting tray then fasten the spring latch to the pcm before connecting all pcm connectors while tightening their end fasteners to 8 n.m (71 lb in). Installation of a new pcm requires use of the service programming system (SPS) for programming through proper procedures.
