GMC Savana 1500 Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on GMC Savana 1500?
A: First, turn off the sir system to remove and replace the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable. This will ensure that the wheels stay straight ahead and the Steering Column in the lock position in order to protect the sir coil assembly from damage. Take the Steering Wheel off the Steering Shaft, pull the tilt lever straight out if that has a tilt column. Then unscrew 2 torx(r) head screws from the lower trim cover and remove the cover, and then unscrew additional 2 torx(r) head screws from the upper trim cover and remove that cover. Release the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness and remove the retaining ring to the sir coil from the Steering Shaft. In case of replacing, dispose of the old sir coil. At installation, the new sir coil assembly should be centered, and the wheels should be straight ahead along with the Steering Column in the lock position. Mount the turn signal cancel cam assembly, align the sir coil assembly with the horn tower, slide on the sir coil onto the Steering Shaft assembly, firmly seat the retaining ring into the groove. Take off the centering tab from the new sir coil. After that, install the upper trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws, which have to be tightened to 1.5 nm (13 lb in), and install the lower trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws, which have to be ensured to engage tabs, and then tightened at the same torque. For tilt columns of the vehicle, align and slide the tilt lever handle into the Steering Column block. Last, install Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft, and turn on the sir system.
