To replace the lower intermediate Steering Shaft, first align the front wheels with the straight ahead position and the
Steering Column in the lock position to avoid damaging the sir coil assembly. Stab the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the Steering Column lower access hole. For vehicles of 6.6l diesel engine, it is necessary to take off the left charge air cooler hose. Mark the relationship between the components of the intermediate shaft for correct installation, the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft, the lower shaft coupler to the steering gear input shaft. Lift and remove the bolt between the two shafts, followed by the bolt of the coupler on the lower shaft and then retreat the intermediate shaft assembly sliding it towards the dash to clear the steering gear input shaft. To install, put the upper end of the intermediate shaft into the upper shaft and the lower end into the intermediate shaft coupler, matching the previously made marks when reinstalling the same shaft. Connect the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler onto the steering gear worm shaft followed by installation and tightening of the lower shaft coupler and the upper end of the shaft using the bolt on the lower to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) and 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) respectively. On the vehicles using a 6.6l diesel motor, reinstall the left charge air cooler hose and, at last, remove the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J42640) from the car Steering Column lower access slot.
