  Q: How to Properly Install an Upper Steering Column Bearing on GMC Sierra 1500?

  In order to change the Steering Shaft upper bearing, you have to remove the Steering Column, then take down the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil, then the turn signal multifunction switch and the ignition lock cylinder case. Then remove the tilt spring and the automatic transmission control. Removal and discarding of the Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring is done by the use of the compressor (J 23653-SIR) and adapter (J 42137). Remove the Turn Signal Switch cancel cam position plate, turn signal switch cancel cam, steering shaft upper bearing spring, steering shaft upper bearing inner race seat from the Steering Column shaft assembly. Slide the two pivot pins out from the Steering Column tilt head assembly with the help of the remover (J 21854-01). The tilt lever has to be installed onto the Steering Column tilt head assembly, pull back the tilt lever while pulling the Steering Column tilt head assembly down and away from the Steering Column. Remove the anti-rotation pin (J 42640), remove the tilt lever and the Steering Shaft upper bearing from the Steering Column tilt head assembly. During the installation, the vehicle's Steering Shaft upper bearing should first be fastened to the Steering Column tilt head assembly, and then the Steering Column shaft assembly should be installed. Maneuver and push the Steering Column tilt head assembly toward the Steering Column to lock the steering wheel lock shoes in place. Lubricate the pivot pins with gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) and firmly seat each pivot pin to the Steering Column tilt head assembly, staking the Steering Column at three points about the pivot pin. Mount the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and the following components onto the Steering Column shaft assembly: lubricate the Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race with gm; p/n 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) and install the Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race , inner race seat , and spring . Lubricate the Turn Signal Switch cancel cam with gm p/n 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529) and install it and Turn Signal Switch cancel cam position plate. Lastly, install the new Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring by using the compressor (J 23653-SIR) and adapter (J 42137) as well as the automatic transmission control assembly, tilt spring, ignition lock cylinder case, turn signal multifunction switch, inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil, and the Steering Column.
