GMC Sonoma Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the power steering pump on GMC Sonoma?
A: A drain pan should be placed underneath the vehicle before removing the air cleaner assembly for Power Steering Pump replacement. Start by removing the Power Steering Pump pulley followed by disconnecting the power steering pressure hose at the power steering gear and then detaching the power steering cooler hose at the pump. First remove the check valve from the air reactor pipe by disconnecting the tube from the lower reactor tube. Then untighten the air reactor pipe lower retaining nut and extract the pipe from the check valve. Begin by removing the Power Steering Pump filler neck tube mounting bolt and then separate the tube from its installation. Finish by taking off the front mounting bolts of the Power Steering Pump and the power steering rear mounting bracket nut from the engine stud. The accessory mounting bracket needs bolt and nut loosening so you can move the bracket toward the front to extract the Power Steering Pump with its pressure hose from the vehicle while remembering the hose position. The power steering pressure hose should be extracted from the pump location. Fasten the power steering pressure hose to the pump before tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). The Power Steering Pump and pressure hose must be reinstalled while the mounting bracket needs resetting before securing all mounting bolts and nut at 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). First tighten the front mounting bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) while you should attach the rear mounting bracket nut to the engine stud and apply torque force to 41 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Install the filler neck tube together with its mounting bolt while tightening it to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). The lower secondary air injection reactor pipe needs to be connected to the check valve while the reactor pipe bracket needs mounting to the pump bracket stud followed by securing the mounting bracket retaining nut to 41 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Proceed with connecting the power steering pressure hose to the gear while simultaneously installing the lower secondary air injection reactor pipe lower connection and the power steering cooler hose to the pump. The conclusion of the installation sequence includes replacing the Power Steering Pump pulley then reattaching the air cleaner assembly while discarding the drain pan to start filling the power steering system followed by bleeding before checking the hose positions relative to frame sections and other components.
