Q: How to replace the front wheel bearing, hub, and seal on a 4WD on GMC Yukon XL 2500?
A: Start by suspending the 4wd vehicle and remove its tire and wheel. Then move on to take off the rotor before replacing the Wheel Hub assembly including bearing and seal. You must remove the wheel drive shaft nut retaining cover and unfasten bolt connections between the Wheel Speed Sensor and Steering Knuckle. A fresh nut must replace the wheel drive shaft during installation. First detach the retaining nut and washer from the wheel driveshaft before you unplug the wheel drive shaft from the Wheel Hub using the axle remover (J 45859). Take first the two 15-series bolts and then unthread all Wheel Hub and bearing bolts for model numbers 25 through 35. The process begins by removing the Wheel Hub, bearing and splash shield from the vehicle. Also take out the o-ring seal from the Steering Knuckle bore for 25/35 series. Check the o-ring seal for damage and reinstall it when you find breaks, dryness, compression set, nicks, or cuts. Before fitting make sure to eliminate all dirt and rust from the Steering Knuckle bore as well as the hub and bearing system then apply Wheel Bearing grease or an equivalent product to the Steering Knuckle bore. Secure the Wheel Speed Sensor mounting bolt at 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.) while fitting the o-ring to the Steering Knuckle of the 25/35 series. Begin by attaching the Wheel Hub and bearing with splash shield designated for 25/35 series. Proceed to install the Wheel Hub and bearing combined with its splash shield for the 15 series. Secure all Wheel Hub and bearing mounting bolts for 15 series and 25/35 series vehicles by tightening Wheel Hub bolts against knuckles to 180 nm (133 foot pounds). Fit the wheel drive shaft assembly nut with washer at the Wheel Hub and bearing and tighten it to 240 nm (177 ft. Lbs.). Reassemble the Wheel Speed Sensor and brake hose mounting bracket bolt to the Steering Knuckle while securing the brake hose clip bolt at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Install the rotor, tire, and wheel afterward and lower the vehicle.
