Start Muffler replacement on 4.81- and 5.31-engines using j 38185 hose clamp pliers to extract rear tires and wheels. Remove both the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate when needed before removing the spare tire. Vehicles with z55 regular production option require the disconnection of the chassis harness from both the electronic suspension rear position sensor and the rear shock. Avoid prying the rear suspension sensor link rod away from the rear position sensor ball stud. To access sensor link rods begin by supporting the sensor lever with your hand while twisting the link rod away from its ball stud connection. Position adjustable steel stands under the rear axle section before possibly removing the rear axle vent hose and its swivel clip from the rear brake pipe crossover. Lower the rear axle slightly after you've removed both rear Shock Absorber lower bolts and nuts to reach the Muffler. First remove Muffler exhaust nuts before pulling the Muffler out of its insulators. After lubricating the exhaust insulators you should reinstall the Muffler and tighten exhaust Muffler nuts to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). While using adjustable jack stands to lift the rear axle install the lower bolts and nuts to the rear shock absorbers before tightening the rear bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). Begin by removing the adjustable jack stands then reinstall the vent hose swivel clip to the rear brake crossover pipe before reattaching the rear axle vent hose if applicable. The installation process requires using j 38185 hose clamp pliers to attach left and right sensor link rods onto sensor levers that sit on their ball studs. Reinstall the spare tire after reconnecting both the electronic suspension rear position sensor and rear shock. Next reinstall the oil pan skid plate using bolts tightened to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before reattaching the rear tires and wheels.

The replacement procedure for the Muffler starts with vehicle lifting and secure support. Start by taking off the exhaust Muffler nuts and after that install adjustable jack stands under the rear axle only when needed. Pull the Muffler away from the insulators followed by the exhaust Muffler removal. Before installing the Muffler place lubricant on the exhaust insulators so you can easily mount them before attaching the Muffler to the insulators. Add the exhaust Muffler nuts onto their threads until torque reaches 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Take out the adjustable jack stands from underneath the rear axle when they were initially installed.
