    Q:
How to replace the front coil springs on Chevrolet S10? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the front Coil Springs, first get the stabilizer shaft link out of the lower Control Arm, then the shock absorber to remove. Position the coil spring remover and installer (J 23028-01) to the end of a suitable jack and use the same tool to cradle the lower Control Arm bushings. Lift the jack to relieve the tension on the lower Control Arm pivot bolts and twist the steering wheel to one side in order to get the steering linkage to clear the front lower Control Arm pivot bolt. Then remove the pivot bolts and nuts from the lower Control Arm, the rear pivot bolt from the lower Control Arm as well as the front pivot bolt of the lower Control Arm. Gradually lower the coil spring remover and installer (J 23028-01) to release front coil spring tension, and remove the front coil spring and the insulators while only applying force to the lower Control Arm or lower ball joint. For installation, set the front coil spring along with the insulators in the lower Control Arm with the final situation that the front coil spring covers only part of an inspection drain hole and leaves the other half or all of it open, rotating the coil spring to provide the appropriate cover. Support the Control Arm with coil spring remover and installer (J 23028-01) and align the coil spring and insulator in the upper seat of the spring from the frame. Raise the same lower Control Arm with the same tool and bolt the lower Control Arm from the frame ensuring it has adequate steering linkage clearance fixing the bolts in the specified direction. Install lower Control Arm front pivot bolt and new nut, then the lower Control Arm rear pivot bolt and a new nut. Tighten up the lower Control Arm pivot bolts nuts while the front suspension is still loaded (the lower Control Arm front bolt should be tightened 115 Nm (85 ft. Lbs.) and the lower Control Arm rear bolt should be tightened up to 98 nm (72 ft. Lbs.)). Lastly, retract the coil spring remover and installer (J 23028-01), install the shock absorber and adjust the stabilizer shaft link to the lower Control Arm and inspect the front wheel alignment.
