    Q:
How to replace the Rack and Pinion steering gear on Buick Lucerne? Posted by Customer
    A:
You need to use the j-42640 (steering column anti-rotation pin) to secure the Steering Wheel in the straight-ahead position before work begins because Steering Wheel rotation will threaten the sir system. Follow these steps to lift the vehicle then remove the tire-wheel sets before proceeding. Begin by removing the power steering Rack And Pinion heat shield from placement. Begin by unscrewing the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt and then separate the intermediate shaft from the power steering Rack And Pinion. Disconnect the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle with aid of the j-24319-b (steering linkage and tie rod puller) after releasing both retaining nuts. A drain pan goes under the vehicle before disconnecting power steering pressure hose and return hose from the Rack And Pinion. Separate the variable effort steering electrical connection only when present. Extract the left stabilizer shaft insulator and steer the Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening once the two Rack And Pinion bolts are removed. The power steering Rack And Pinion replacement requires moving the existing outer tie rods ahead of installation. To install the Rack And Pinion position it through the left wheel opening then bolt down two security fasteners to 120 nm (89 lb ft) torque before installing the left stabilizer shaft insulator. Screw the return hose of power steering first and tighten it to 34 nm (25 lb ft) before you move on to the pressure hose with the same torque. The installation process involves hooking up variable effort steering electrical connections when equipped and installing retaining nuts to the steering knuckles. These retaining nuts require torque of 30 nm (22 lb ft) along with an additional 180 degrees of rotation. The intermediate shaft should join the Rack And Pinion before installing a lower pinch bolt at 47 nm (37 lb ft). Finally, reattach the power steering Rack And Pinion heat shield and tire and wheel assemblies. After lowering the vehicle complete power steering system bleeding while inspecting for any fluid leaks. Front toe measurement must follow.
