2006 Buick Lucerne Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2006 Buick Lucerne?
A: In order to replace the Rack And Pinion, lock the Steering Column in place using the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640). Lift up the vehicle and take out tires and wheels. Next, remove the Rack And Pinion heatshield. Disconnection of steering coals must be done after checking that the wheels are straight ahead and Steering Column is in the lock position to avoid coil assembly from being damaged. Unscrew the bolt and suddenly remove the intermediate shaft as well as the connection to the Rack And Pinion. Take off the outer tie rods retaining nuts, and use the universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) to pull the outer tie rods off the steering knuckles. Unplug the power steering pressure and return hoses from the Rack And Pinion, and (if there is one), replace the variable effort steering electrical connector. Eliminate the left stabilizer shaft insulator and the separation of the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Next, take away the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts from there, extract the Rack And Pinion via the left wheel opening if in some point replacing and transferring the outer tie rods from there. Installation, mount the new Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts that must be tightened to 95nm (70 ft.lbs.). Re-install the left stabilizer shaft insulator, and hook-up the power steering pressure and return hoses, torquing them to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). If available, reconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector and then install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckles and tighten the retaining nuts to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) + an additional 180 degrees. Attach the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion and fix the lower pinch bolt tightening it to 47 nm (37ft. Lbs.). Lastly, reattach the tires and wheels, take the vehicle down, come out with Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640), bleed the power steering system, check for leaks, and work the front toe.
