Begin steering gear replacement by inserting the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) through the column's underside to lock the Steering Column. Position the vehicle on supports before you take out the tires and wheels. Afterwards detach the Rack And Pinion's heatshield. The steering wheel should face forward and the Steering Column must be secured in toggle position before disconnecting any steering components to stop coil assembly damage. First remove the lower pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft then disconnect the shaft from the Rack And Pinion before removing the outer tie rods retaining nuts. Begin outer tie rod separation process from steering knuckles by using universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) before removing power steering pressure and return hoses from Rack And Pinion. For equipment with variable effort steering disconnect the electrical connector while also removing the left stabilizer shaft insulator and separating the tie rod ends from the knuckles. First disconnect Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and pull out the Rack And Pinion from the left-wheel opening. After placing the Rack And Pinion through the left wheel opening properly install the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts and torque them to 95 n.m (70 lb ft). The left stabilizer shaft insulator goes back into position while the power steering pressure and return hoses connect with 30 n.m (22 lb ft) torque. After hooking up any available variable effort steering electrical connector, install the outer tie rod to its respective steering knuckle while securing retaining nuts at 30 n.m (22 lb ft) torque with an additional 180 degrees of rotation. After connecting the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion you should install and torque the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 47 n.m (37 lb ft). After fitting new tires and wheels and the Rack And Pinion heatshield the vehicle should be lowered completely. You must first remove the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) from the Steering Column before you perform the power steering system bleed and leak check and adjust the front toe.

To remove the Rack And Pinion first lock the Steering Wheel into straight position with the help of the j-42640 (steering column, anti rotation pin). Thus preventing any rotation and causing damage to the sir system. Raise and support the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Secure the outer tie rod using the j-24319-b (steering linkage and tie rod puller) and untie the retaining nuts. Unscrew and remove the intermediate shaft, pinch bolt and release the intermediate shaft from servo. Remove the Rack And Pinion heat shield and unscrew the rear transmission mount nuts. If applicable, remove the variable effort steering electric connector. Put a drain pan under the vehicle and unbolt the power steering pressure and return hoses from the Rack And Pinion. Take off the pair of Rack And Pinion bolts, jack up and hold back the rear end of the frame while lowering it to reveal the Rack And Pinion, extracted from the driver's side. Fezes required elements over to fresh Rack And Pinion, place it in the vehicle, and lift up the ruminance section of the frame. Mount the frame bolts to 192 nm (142 lb ft) and the transmission mount nuts to 40 nm (30 lb ft) as well as the two Rack And Pinion bolts to 120 nm (89 lb ft). Reattach the power steering return hose and pressure hose, making sure to tighten both fittings to 34 nm (25 lb ft). Remove the drain pan; connect the variable effort steering electrical connector if equipped, and reinstall the power steering Rack And Pinion heat shield. Attach the tie rods at the outer side to the Steering Knuckle and fasten using retaining nuts that are tightened to 30 nm (22 lb ft) and then additional 180-degree rotation. Connect back the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion, install the pinch bolt, and tighten it to 45 nm (33 lb ft). Reinstall the tire and wheel assemblies and lower the vehicle, and clamp off the j-42640 pin. Finally, bleed the power steering, and measure and adjust the front toe as required.

Lock the steering column with the Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin (J 42640).

Remove the rack and pinion from the driver's side of the vehicle and transfer necessary components.
