2007 Cadillac DTS Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2007 Cadillac DTS?
A: Start with installing the steering column antirotation pin (J 42640) through the steering column access hole to lock and orientate the steering column correctly. Start by raising the vehicle then placing it on a support system before removing all tires and wheels. Begin by disassembling the outer tie rods retaining nuts and use the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) to detach the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle. Use the steering linkage take puller to remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt until the Rack And Pinion becomes free of the piece. Next disconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector if installed. Following this remove the rear transmission mount upper mounting nuts and steering gear heat shield until the Rack And Pinion disconnects. Start by adding a drain pan to the vehicle's base and then extract power steering hoses from the Rack And Pinion while removing the bolts that secure the steering gear. Lower the vehicle's rear end when the frame is properly supported by a jack so technicians can access the steering gear while removing its mounting bolts. Take the Rack And Pinion mechanism from the driver's side of the vehicle before moving essential components. After returning the Rack And Pinion into the vehicle you should lift the frame's rear section. The frame mounting bolts should be tightened to 192 n.m (142 lb ft) before the transmission mount mounting nuts reach 40 n.m (30 lb ft). Screw the Rack And Pinion mounting bolts to 95 n.m (70 lb ft) before tightening the power steering pressure and return hoses to 27 n.m (20 lb ft). The variable effort steering electrical connector must go through attachment before replacing the Rack And Pinion heat shield and drain pan. Secure the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles using a torque of 47 n.m (35 lb ft) which can be extended to an additional 1/6 turn up to 70 n.m (52 lb ft). After installing the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to a torque of 45 n.m (33 lb ft). To finish the installation reinstall tires along with wheels followed by vehicle lowering while removing the steering column antirotation pin (J 42640) then completing power steering system bleeding and performing front toe adjustment.
