• Q: How to replace the rack and pinion inner tie rod (Quiet Valve) on 2007 Cadillac DTS?

  A: First remove the Rack and Pinion Boot before securing the gear in a vise but avoid steering gear preload changes to prevent damage during replacement of the rack and pinion inner Tie Rod (Quiet Valve). Place the shock dampener off the inner Tie Rod assembly before sliding it onto the rack. Begin by putting a pipe wrench on the rack's end that's next to the inner Tie Rod housing and apply a wrench to the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing to rotate it counterclockwise until both pieces disconnect from each other. Detach the shock dampener from inside the Tie Rod housing then reinstall it on the rack. Use a pipe wrench on the rack while holding the inner Tie Rod housing flats with a wrench to rotate the inner Tie Rod counterclockwise until the rack releases the component. For female rack configurations with male inner tie rods work to eliminate all remaining loctite(R) from rack and inner Tie Rod threads before new installation. Loctite(R) won't be present when the rack has a male configuration and an inner Tie Rod with female threads. Begin installation by sliding the shock dampener to the front side of the rack while maintaining cleanliness of threads before applying loctite(R) 262 bonding agent or equivalent to inner Tie Rod threads for female rack and male inner Tie Rod configurations. Use a pipe wrench on the rack beside the inner Tie Rod housing to apply torque because the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing require j 34028 driven by a torque wrench set to 100 n.m (74 lb ft). Before fixing the shock dampener to the rack, clean all threads and apply loctite(R) 262 or similar material to female rack and male inner Tie Rod interfaces. Tighten the inner Tie Rod onto the rack using a pipe wrench on the rack next to the inner Tie Rod housing while applying torque to its flats using j 34028 on a torque wrench to achieve 100 n.m or 74 lb ft. Arrange the inner Tie Rod assembly inside a vise before stroking both sides of female inner Tie Rod assembly housing against male rack when racks use this configuration to check stake clearance with 0.25 mm gage. The shock dampener should slide over the inner Tie Rod housing so it rests against its final position then install the Rack and Pinion Boot.
