  Q: How to replace the rack and pinion inner tie rod (Quiet Valve) on Cadillac DTS?

  A: Begin inner Tie Rod (Quiet Valve) replacement by detaching the steering gear from the vehicle while removing the Rack and Pinion Boot and securing the gear for vise mounting. Steering gear preload adjustment should never be altered before removing the inner Tie Rod because it could damage the pinion and steering gear. Put the shock dampener aside from the inner Tie Rod assembly before sliding it back onto the rack. Secure a pipe wrench onto the rack next to the inner Tie Rod housing and apply a wrench to the flats of the housing to twist it counterclockwise and separate it from the rack. Perform the same sequence for inner Tie Rod housing and inner Tie Rod while cleaning threads and applying loctite 262 or equivalent when needed. To secure the inner Tie Rod on the rack use a pipe wrench alongside a torque wrench equipped with j 34028 which should be set to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) torque value. If necessary stake the female inner Tie Rod assembly housing to the male rack ensuring correct staking through the use of a 0.25 mm gage. The shock dampener slides over the inner Tie Rod housing as part of reassembling the Rack And Pinion Boot before installing the steering gear.
